Kerala Folklore Museum is the life’s work of George Thaliyath and his wife. To house their extensive and unique collection they have built a magnificent three storey building made from doors, walls and windows gathered from houses and temples around the Southern states. From the moment you step into the pillared lobby you sense you have entered a special place and as you walk from hall to hall you continue to be surprised by the way the articles have been gathered, restored and displayed. Finding a good museum is a hard task in India but this couple have understood the value of the treasures they have and have written informative labels for the wide range of artifacts. The collections include musical instruments, temple lamps and statues, masks, string puppets, jewellery and household utensils dating back to the 17th century. The extensive collection of ritual and hunting masks from the 15th century is the only one of its kind in the country. For those with an interest in traditional performing arts you will be mesmerized by the hall dedicated to costumes of Kathakali, Theyyam and Yakshagana, the largest costume collection in India. There is a separate area for all the bells, breast plates and other ornaments used by Theyyam Dancers when they go into their trance. The museum staff will show you around and answer any questions you have.
Having absorbed all of these antiquities you will ascend to the highest floor which houses the Kanjadalam Theatre adorned with mural paintings and intricately carved roof panels, this is the most appropriate setting for the cultural performances showcasing Kathakali, Kalaripayyat and Bharatnatyam. These shows are available on request.
