Elephant Interaction Experience at Periyar
 

Elephants have played a major role in Indian life for millennia- both as working animals and objects of veneration- the ever popular Ganesh, the elephant-headed god of Hinduism- being a prime example. While in many areas modern technology has usurped the traditional role of the working elephant, in Kerala in particular it is not unusual to see an elephant walking along the side of the road on its way to shift logs or undertake other work. At Periyar it is possible to spend time with a mahout (elephant trainer and minder) and glean some understanding the complex relationship between humans and this most majestic animal. During an elephant interaction, you will have the chance to feed, bathe and ride an elephant- even just spending time in the presence of these wonderful creatures is an experience in itself.
