Aihole is a most interesting place to visit as within its fortified walls can be found sandstone temples of varying types with the earliest examples dating back to the 6th Century. A must visit is the ancient Durga temple as this is the largest and finest monument located here. It has an unusual apsidal sanctuary which makes it resemble a Buddhist chaitya. It has many beautiful carvings and sculptural masterpieces. A tour of Aihole would be incomplete without a visit to the Ravanaphadi temple excavated out of rocky surroundings; this temple dates back to the second half of the 7th century. The two other temples that can be visited here are the Ladh Khan temple one of the most ancient temples in Aihole and the Meguti Jain temple which sits on top of a hill and dates back to the 7th Century
