Periyar Guided Nature Walk
 

An easy walk along well formed trails, this is a wonderful opportunity to see many of the smaller species which inhabit the forests along the shores of Periyar Lake. There are few places in India where it is permitted to walk in protected forests (due in part of the presence of predators such as tigers, but also to limit the number of visitors and minimise any damage they may cause) but the Guided Walk here is a notable exception. This project started as an incentive by the state Government to provide alternative ways for local tribal people, who had previously been using their tracking skills to poach animals, to earn their living from the forest. The walk begins at a ranger station where canvas shoe covers are offered to prevent leeches from getting into your shoes. Then it’s a short bamboo raft ride across the Lake to the far shore. The walk itself lasts 2-2.5 hours along any one of several trails. Among the mammals and birds often seen during the walk are Nilgiri Black Langurs (a type of monkey found only in the Western Ghats), Malabar Giant Squirrels which are also endemic to the region and several of India’s many species of hornbills- one of the most majestic birds found in these tropical forests.
