Half day tour of UNESCO World heritage site: Fatehpur Sikri

Located 37 kms from the city of Agra and best visited when staying in Agra or normally when travelling to or from Jaipur explore Fatehpur Sikri with an English speaking guide. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity and Fatehpur Sikri is a place that has been identified as being worthy of its protection. The Archeological Survey of India has been instrumental in taking care of this perfectly preserved example of a Mughal city.
It was built by Emperor Akbar between 1569 and 1585 although it was abandoned soon after due to water shortages. This sprawling complex is made of red sandstone and combines both Hindu and Mughal architecture. The city contains the mausoleum of the Sufi fakir, Saleem Chishti who is said to have granted Akbar and his Hindu queen Jodhabai their wish for a son. The main entrance to Fatehpur Sikri is through the 175 feet Buland Darwaza, the highest gateway in the world.

The Panch Mahal is a five-storeyed tower, the highest point in Fatehpur Sikri. This extremely airy tower is said to have been the home of one of the emperor's many queens.
