Half day tour of Old Goa

Accompanied by your guide explore Old Goa. Back in the 16th Century Old Goa had a population that exceeded that of London and Lisbon. The Portuguese catholic heritage and the wealth of this era are reflected in the imposing churches and cathedrals that still exist in Old Goa today. A highlight amongst the churches visited today will be the Basilica of Bom Jesus, built in the 16th century this was the first minor Basilica in India. It has recently become a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Inside the church are the remains of St. Francis Xavier who was the pioneer saint of Goa. The church is made of white marble and the alter is decorated with beautiful frescoes. Finish your tour with a visit to what was once Goa’s largest monastery; the Convent of St. Francis of Assisi (built in 1517). Today the monastery is home to the Goa archeological museum. A huge bronze statue of Alfonso de Albuquerque, dominates the entrance hall. Exhibits include artifacts from the animist cult that flourished in this part of India centuries ago.
