Accompanied by a guide this tour explores Cochin. Cochin has a long history of trading connections as, Arab, Chinese, Dutch and British and Portuguese seafarers followed the sea route to Cochin. The influences of these differing cultures can still be observed today. The Chinese fishing nets swaying in the breeze, the Jewish Synagogue, Dutch Palace, Portuguese architecture, Bolgatty Palace are all remnants of this past.
Start the tour with a visit to Fort Cochin where there are several historic sites. The Jewish Synagogue ( Closed Fri/Sat) was built in 1568 AD. The Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Cochin rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of interesting features here. The Dutch Palace (Closed Fri) built by the Portuguese and 1555 AD acquired its present name after 1663 when the Dutch carried out extensions and repairs of the palace. The interiors are decorated with murals from the Ramayana and there are some fine displays of royal costumes. Continue your day by visiting St. Francis Church, and the Chinese fishing nets. Then proceed to Jew town a bustling port area and location of the fragrant spice markets.
