The Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal (this being her title meaning “chosen one of the Palace”) after she died in 1631 giving birth to their fourteenth child. The Taj Mahal took some 20,000 people 22 years to complete. You will have some time to explore and absorb this monument up close. The detail of the marble inlay work using precious stones needs closer examination to fully appreciate the craftsmanship.

Later visit the Agra Fort built in red sandstone with its magnificent palaces, halls of public and private audience and its beautiful gardens. This is where Emperor Shah Jahan was kept under house arrest by his third son Aurangzeb and here he spent the last year of his life viewing the Taj Mahal from across the river Yamuna.
