Half Day tour of Khajuraho

Accompanied by a guide explore the Western group of Temples that were hidden in dense forest for 700 years until they were “rediscovered” in 1838. The Western temples are perhaps most renowned because they represent the artistry of the powerful Chandela dynasty. Khajuraho was the peacetime capital and because of their generous patronage these temples exist. The remoteness of these temples saved them from the ravages of Muslim raiders unlike other places that were more accessible. The Western group of temples is perhaps the most significant and also the most magnificent and they are located within an enclosure and a garden maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.

The highlights of this tour include the Kandariya Mahadev Temple as this is the tallest of the temples, not only in the western group but in the entire collection. It is believed to have been built around 1025 AD in honor of Lord Shiva. This 30-metre-high structure features erotic carvings and your guide will explain various theories as to the significance of these. Another famous temple visited on this tour is the Lakshmana Temple which is among the most famous on account of its erotic sculpture collection.

After seeing the Vishwanath Temple continue your tour by visiting the Archaeological Museum which houses the loose statues and sculptures found lying on the grounds of the ruined ancient temples. The Matangesvara Temple outside the enclosure is still used for worship today.
