Accompanied by a guide visit, Srirangapatnam located 15km from Mysore. It is located on an island in the Kaveri River and is named after the temple located on its western side which you may visit. The island has many monuments spanning a thousand years and all the major dynasties of the South have left their relics and monuments on the island. Your guide may explain its interesting history and how the island was important to the Hoysalas of the 11th century, the Vijayanagar kings of Chandragiri in the 17th century, about Tipu Sultan, and finally, the French and the British. It is a lovely place to walk around as there are some nice quiet spots. In the afternoon return to Mysore to continue your sightseeing tour. You will be enthralled by Mysore palace with its displays of art from all around the world. The opulence of a golden throne decorated with precious gems illustrates the wealth and extravagance of the rulers that made this palace their home. The palace itself has been built in the Indo-Saracenic style and has an interesting architecture with domes and turrets. If you are lucky enough to be in Mysore on a Sunday you may wish to return here in the evening to see the palace lit up with ninety-six thousand light bulbs. Located on top of Chamundi Hill the tour continues by a visit to The Chamundeeswari temple. It houses an impressive sculpture of a bull carved out of a single granite rock which is 4.57 meters in height and 6.10 meters in length. The temple was built in the 6th century and is dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. A flight of one thousand steps leads up to the summit, where the temple is located so do be prepared for a climb if you want some exercise. Alternatively travel to the top by road. Finish your tour by a visit to the Devaraja Market with all its colorful flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
