Situated in a remote corner of Wayanad district are the Edakkal caves, site of what are considered to be the oldest known rock carvings in India which date back to Neolithic times. The access to the caves is a steep climb up a road and a final ascent through forest but can easily be managed by anyone of moderate fitness. The main cave was formed in the ancient past by a massive slab of rock falling over a natural cleft in the hillside, creating a large chamber which provided a safe hiding place for the hunter/gatherer tribes which must have occupied this area in later years. The soft rock surfaces inside the cave were ideal for carving and the tribal people turned several of the cavern’s walls into their own art galleries with carvings depicting animal figures as well as representations of animist deities and people. A visit to the Edakkal cave region offers a tantalizing glimpse of an ancient past which is still little understood- ongoing research by anthropologists from around the world is uncovering new evidence of the occupation and use of these caves- as well as being a journey into a stunningly picturesque part of northern Kerala. A Forest Department guide is present at the caves to help explain the significance of the carvings and something of the history of the region. The caves are open daily.
