Hospet is located 13km from Hampi and 350 km from Bangalore, and is known as the gateway to Hampi. Another major attraction near Hospet is holy town of Harihara, situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. The pilgrims believe that a dip in the river here will cleanse them of the sins because of an association between Lord Vishnu and the Tungabhadra River.The Tungabhadra Dam is located at Hospet and it was built in the twentieth century.Hospet  is also known as the 'Steel City' because of the presence of many iron and steel industries. Iron-ore mining is a relatively recent phenomenon in this region. This is due to international demands for iron-ore, particularly from China.
